Johannesburg, South Africa
Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city, its financial hub, and one of its most diverse. The city has much history and fun to offer.
Areas:
Rosebank
The Rosebank district is a mix of chic residential apartments and commercial spots that will give you a taste of African culture but with a touch of European vibes! SaThe area is home to tons of art galleries (like the Goodman Gallery), shopping malls (Rosebank Mall), and restaurants.
Newtown
Newtown is a bustling neighborhood located in Johannesburg’s Inner City. Set at the heart of the metropolis, this neighborhood is where you’ll find many of Johannesburg’s top tourist attractions as well as important art galleries, museums, and historic landmarks
Stays:
@Sandton Hotel
The service was excellent, we received a great welcome upon arrival.
Airbnb
I have found better deals on Airbnb versus some hotels.
Restaurants:
Insights at Sanctuary Mandela
As a tribute to our late President Nelson Mandela, the highly-rated Insights at Sanctuary Mandela invites guests to gather with family and friends within Madiba’s former place of residence to share in his love for food.
The Grillhouse Rosebank
The Grillhouse Rosebank is a renowned Johannesburg steakhouse offering premium meat cuts and an extensive wine list. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere and is a popular spot for business dinners or special occasions.
Activities:
The Apartheid Museum
The Apartheid Museum highlights the inequity, brutality, and absurdity of white minority rule in the country. The museum’s aim is to encourage South Africa in overcoming its oppressive history and moving forward.
Soweto
Soweto, which stands for South Western Townships, was given that name in 1963. The neighborhood began as a temporary enclave for gold mine employees in the late 1800s, then evolved into a black Johannesburg ghetto with forced apartheid settlement.
Gyms:
Virgin Active
The first gym I went to was the Virgin Active in Morningside, a neighborhood a few minutes north of Sandton. Upon walking into the Virgin gym, I was quite impressed with the facilities. Everything was new, there were plenty of machines, and there’s a huge pool.
Planet Fitness
I checked out the Planet Fitness in Rosebank and compared to the Virgin, it was about on par, perhaps giving a slight edge to the Virgin gyms.
Desserts:
Crumbs And Cream
A cute little store in Illovo/Rosebank area. The staff was very friendly and it wasn’t busy at all when we went. I was a bit disappointed with the ice cream selection as there were only four options.
PAUL Melrose Arch
The bakery has a bunch of pastries.
Drinks:
A Streetbar Named Desire
The DJs were on fire. Cocktails were amazing. Really affordable place. Dope vibe and synergy.
Obscura Cocktail Bar & Eatery
The food, cocktails and service were all excellent. The food is sharing plates, so it's fun to try variety, and the portions are generous. The restaurant itself is beautiful and interesting.
