Identity

Identity is a set of physical, psychological, and interpersonal characteristics that is unique to you. It  is influenced by parents and peers during childhood and experimentation in teens through adulthood. Identity can be a range of social identities and social roles. Social identities are identities that are shared with similar people such as age, race, gender, ability, religion, financial status, sexual orientation, and immigration status. Social roles refer to the expectations, responsibilities, and behaviors we adopt in certain situations. Social roles are labels such as parent, child, partner, friend, etc. Identity also encompasses political opinions, moral attitudes, values, and religious beliefs, all which guide the choices we make on a daily basis. We take on new roles such as divorced, retired, or death of a loved one that makes parts of identity fluid, causing identity to be a lifelong journey.

Here are 3 ways to get to know yourself better:

  • Get to know your interests, likes, and dislikes

What type of movies do you prefer? What do you like to eat? Who do you like to be around most? What reasons do you like to around that person?

  • Figure out your beliefs, values, and goals

What beliefs and values are the most important to you? What key traits do you feel are the most important in both yourself and in others (honest, kind, humor, brave, etc.) .

  • Spend Time Alone

When you want to get to know someone, you spend time with them, right? It follows, then, that getting to know yourself better will involve some quality time alone.

BONUS

  • Be aware of your thoughts.

We have intrusive thoughts sometimes, and they do not have to control your identity. While it is not pleasant to have intrusive, negative thoughts, learn to aware. You can hold the thoughts, let them pass, or choose different thoughts.  Having a thought, doesn't make it true.

Diving Deeper

Everything is energy, including you! There are oceans of energies, and even though we cannot perceive all of them with our five senses, they have a profound effect on us. Science shows us that everything is made up of energy. It’s constantly ‘flowing’ and changing form. The body is the physical energetic vessel used by the soul energy, just as a car is driven by a driver. Since we and everything around us is energy, we are all connected. The way you think and feel can change the world.

Therefore, it’s essential to:

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.

Watch your words, for they become actions.

Watch your actions, for they become habits.

Watch your habits, for they become your character.

Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.
