Four Ways Helpers Can Help Help Themselves!

You are the vessel for your problems, but you are also the solutions for them. - Author
Helping others in need helps to define humanity. When we help others, our brains emit three chemicals, often referred to as the happiness trifecta: Serotonin (produces intense feelings of wellbeing), Dopamine (intensifies motivation), and Oxytocin (increases a sense of connection to others). It is easy to see how helpers can become addicted to helping. Individuals know that helping has positive affects, but helping can also have negative affects!
-
Out of balance helpers repeatedly take on others' responsibilities, burdens, and problems, even sacrificing their self (energy, space, time, money, etc.) to help others. It is the type of help that stops growth and development. It encourages others to depend on the helper, which easily moves into enabling. The individuals requesting help misses the opportunity to take full responsibility, learn, increase strength, and be resilient.
-
The helper could also be avoiding facing their own issues (abandonment, insecurities, powerlessness, lack of purpose, etc.) Helpers can find false purpose in saving others, while abandoning the search for their true purpose. It is important to remember when individuals feel powerless over their own lives, they will attempt to have power over others' lives.

Helpers are also known as heroes, rescuers, teachers, caregivers, etc.). Great help is what you give, it’s not all that you are!
